Review: Big Papa’s at The Sunflower Lounge, Birmingham

The Sunflower Lounge has been a popular Birmingham live music venue for 10 years now, and has become known  as one of the best places to go if you want to listen to a band over a pint. Recently however Big Papa’s Beautiful South has taken over the food at The Sunflower Lounge, turning this already awesome bar into a doubly awesome restaurant. Myself and a few other local food bloggers were invited down by the head chef Anthony to try the food, and it is safe to say it definitely lived up to their already flourishing reputation.

One of the best things about the food is that it is such good value for money, you really do pay very little for some top quality grub. Big Papa’s source their ingredients at the local Birmingham markets and cook everything fresh seven days a week. The mains come with two sides of your choice, BBQ sauce and a homemade spicy sauce made with mango and scotch bonnet peppers, all served in a rustic tray.

Though the menu isn’t vast, I wanted everything on it (I’m such a feeble excuse for a veggie), but I stuck with the vegetarian option of Mac ‘n’ Cheese and went for sweet potato fries and greens as my sides. I’m pleased to say that the macaroni cheese, poached egg and butternut squash dish was so good that I was not left with the all-too-common feeling that the vegetarian option was an afterthought. The sweet potato fries were hands-down the best I’ve ever had (and believe you me I am a sweet potato fry connoisseur), everything was cooked to perfection and the two dipping sauces complimented the meal really well. The other diners were equally enthusiastic about their mains, which included pulled cola beef brisket and buttermilk fried chicken.

The Sunflower Lounge is only a 2 minute walk from the Bullring (come out of TK Maxx, go right and you’re pretty much there!) so would be perfect for a post-shopping dinner. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is great and the food is some of the best in Birmingham, so you’d be mad not to pay a visit. A big thanks goes to Anthony for having us all, but I do now hold him personally responsible for making any other sweet potato fry experience a bitter disappointment in comparison – I’ll just have to go back for more!

*We were invited to try the food complimentary for review purposes, this does not effect my honest opinion.

Sounds SO delicious! I live in London but have a friend who lives in Birmingham so I’ll definitely have to visit this restaurant with her! Sweet potato fries are my all time fav, so I’ll be sure to check these out!

Same here! I don’t know why I had it in my head that it’s a kind of cop-out meal – this dish proved Mac ‘n’ Cheese can be as amazing as any restaurant food! xx
