Tonight sees the return of Downton Abbey to our screens, so invite your pals over, get the hot choc (and compulsory marshmallows) in, and get ready to be reminded what Sunday nights are all about. Downton has seen a fair few characters come and go in the four series so far, and whether we like them or not, we’ve come to be attached to them all. There are a few in particular though that most of us just want to pluck out of the telly and have in our lives – so here are the 5 Downton Abbey characters we all wish we knew.
Violet, The Dowager Countess of Grantham
We’ve all got those elderly relatives who say it how it is, and although they can be a tad too blunt, we wouldn’t have them any other way. Despite Violet’s harsh words and aversion to change, her dry observations would always make her a laugh to be around, and we know deep down she’s a good egg. The Dowager would be able to get a giggle out of you with just the raise of an eyebrow, and would be sure to be comedy gold at any family gathering. She might criticize your cooking, but who wouldn’t want Granny Violet round for dinner?
Mrs Patmore would make a smashing first boss. Although she is strict, she can push you to achieve things you never thought you could do, and is always happy to help you move on to bigger things. Daisy’s confidence in the kitchen is purely down to Mrs Patmore’s support, even if it has often come in the form of a nag, a rant or a full on explosion. Despite Mrs Patmore’s no-crap attitude where there is cooking involved, her genuine care for her employees cannot be hidden when it comes to advising them on their love lives. A first boss who also doubles up as a mother figure? We don’t often see that these days, but at Daisy’s age we could all probably have done with a bit of Mrs Patmore’s tough love in the workplace.
Lady Sybil (R.I.P) would make the perfect bestie. Mature beyond her years, she’d be the best person to go to in a time of need, yet she also has a wild side making her great fun to be around. We’ve all got those friends that deep down, you just want to BE, but who also bring out the best in us. Lady Sybs would be a breath of fresh air, encouraging you to stand up for what you believe in and make your own path in life. Plus, after being brave enough to don a pretty snazzy pair of trousers back in series one, her good advice would also stretch to fashion guru – making her an all round perfect pal.
Mr Bates is by no means perfect, but his potential for a darker side is led entirely by loving his wife Anna more than, I’m sure you’ll agree, any other man ever could. Anna and Bates are a reminder that being in a relationship is never plain sailing, but the love you have for each other always pulls you through (apologies for the slush, it’s just the effect these two have on me). Bates puts those he loves above everything, so although I can’t quite bring myself to wish he was my husband, I think we can agree he would make a pretty awesome dad. In fact, Anna and Mr Bates just need to hurry up and have baby Bates, those two would be the parenting dream team.
No one can fail to have a soft spot for Mrs Hughes. Like a good aunt, she is not afraid of giving you a few home truths, but her caring nature would leave you in no doubt she has your best interest at heart. Good ol’ Mrs Hughes, always conscious of doing the right thing, is an out and out top notch lady, and her recent, more personal plotline of her feelings for Carson makes her all the more lovable. If Mrs Hughes and Carson could just miraculously be my Aunt and Uncle that would be great.
Hope you all enjoy Downton tonight, at 9pm on ITV!
