Top 10 Running Songs

It’s the start of a new year and many of us are pounding the pavements in the hope of losing the extra bit of chub that Santa brought us. If you’re anything like me, you’ll know that the right song coming up at the right time through your headphones can be the difference between making it up that hill, making it another half a mile or simply just giving up. There are three elements to a good running song, in my humble opinion. Firstly, it has to be feel good, as positive thinking is key to a successful run (cue motivational quotes from Pinterest). Secondly, and most obviously, it must have a good beat as if you have any sense of rhythm whatsoever you will find yourself running to the pace of the song. Finally, though not essential, it also helps to have some motivating, pumping, or general ego boosting lyrics, as when you’re looking like you’ve showered in your own sweat and are starting to consider that this is what dying feels like, it’s always good to have Jessie J remind you that you’re actually feeling sexy and free.

TOP 10

Florence & The Machine – Dog Days Are Over Let Florence be your own personal trainer as she tells you to run fast for your mother and fast for your father, whatever that means.

Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars – Uptown Funk As well as the great beat, it never hurts to learn from the master of self love, Mr Bruno Mars. So you better start believing that you are, quite frankly, too hot.

Outkast – Hey Ya The rhythm of this song was made for running to, and it’s okay that your thighs are a tad wobbly in your leggings, it will only help when you come to shake it like a polaroid picture.

Rizzle Kicks – Mama Do The Hump “We’re gonna burn some calories right here right now, ain’t over ’til the fat boy slims, mama” Not that you’re fat, or a boy, but you get the idea.

Beyonce – Run The World (Girls) When it comes to feeling like an empowered, independent and strong woman, Beyonce has it in the bag. Running always makes me feel more like the kind of person I want to become, which is basically Beyonce.

David Guetta & Snoop Dog – Sweat This song is perfect for when you have a long, seemingly never ending stretch to get done with. Also, rethink that tomato face and wet fringe, sweating is sexy…honest…

The Caesars – Jerk It Out Something about this song makes me feel like I’m in some kind of training montage in a film.

Britney Spears – Work Bitch Having Britney Spears tell you to ‘Work Bitch’ might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but looking ‘hot in a bikini’ is always good running motivation…if only running would also earn me the Lamborghini and the martinis aswell…

Taylor Swift – Shake It Off Running is a great way to let off steam and to remove yourself from the trivial worries of daily life. Take a tip from Taylor and learn to shake, or run, it off.

Adam Ant – Goody Two Shoes If this song isn’t made for running to then I don’t know what is. Even just having it on at home makes me want to put my trainers on!

What are your favourite songs to work out to? Happy running everyone!

For that big hill: ‘Running up that hill’ Kate Bush. It works, although lyrics don’t fit with your criterion.

I think I needed this post. Uptown Funk, Shake it Off and Run the World are definitely going to be added to my playlist. Maybe it will get me to actually listen to the playlist and go running!

I only have one of these on my running playlist so far – nothing like a powerful Beyonce song to keep you going! I love Katy Perry songs to run to because they have a great beat and I like to pretend I’m running along a nice California beach rather than the streets of central Bristol haha!

Katie Perry is such a good one! I’ve only got part of me so far, but I think I need to add some more! I feel that any strong and powerful women give me a boost when running! And yes, trying to imagine you’re somewhere else always has to be done! x

Let me know what you think!
